FINAL SERIES COMMENCED IN STRONG WINDS ON DAY 3 OF 2019 JUNIOR WORLDS IN PORTOROZ

04 Jul 2019

We wished for more wind and we got it! After the proper warm-up in the gentle sea breeze on the first two days of our Junior World Championship it was time for some action. The NE bora wind came as a refreshment, it cooled the air a bit, and provided great sailing conditions in steady 13-18 knots, in the outer loop gusting even up to 25 kts, with waves that offered great downwind surfing to the more experienced crews.

As for a change, there was no waiting today, the fleet sailed out right after the morning BIB ceremony, since the first start was scheduled for 10 am already. It was the first day of the final races today, so the fleets were divided into gold and silver for men & mixed crews and the women group continued their single fleet racing. The fleet sailed out of the Piran bay for the steadier and stronger breeze. Race officer Bojan Gale decided for three races today, so we’re now a race ahead of schedule.

Bojan Gale: “We did three races today because we’re expecting a bit worse sailing conditions tomorrow and especially on Saturday. All the races were sailed under the Oscar flag, since there were always more than 8 knots, so I hope the sailors really enjoyed the conditions and their sailing area.”

Today’s sailing conditions should have come as more favorable to the heavier and more experienced crews, yet it turned out the leading teams are, at their early age, already nicely overall skilled sailors who can sail well in different sailing conditions. Italian team ITA 757 Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabro, who won both yesterday’s races, extended their lead with another three wins today. They’re firmly in the lead with 8 points total. Second place after today’s racing goes to GER 22 Daniel Göttlich and Linus Klasen with 30 points. The best ranking mixed team ITA 54 Maria Vittoria Marcesini and Bruno Festo keeps third with 31 points.

The girls GER 69 Luise and Helena Wanser, without winning a race today, kept their leading position with 17 points in front of another German team, GER 20 Theres Dahnke and Birte Winkel with 22 points and FRA 19 Paola Amar and Marine Riou, who remain on third (23 points).

Bojan Gale: “Regarding tomorrow, we’ll wait until 6 pm for the latest weather models, the idea is to make 2 races, with starts probably at 1 pm or even later.”

In the lead of the mixed fleet are ITA 54 Maria Vittoria Marcesini and Bruno Festo, who are also currently ranking third overall with 31 points, followed by POL 13 Seweryn Wysokinski and Hanna Dzik on 14th position with 67 points and ITA 75 Andrea Totis and Alice Linussi with the same points one place behind in the overall ranking.
